“A harbinger of things to come,” said Roy Rogers, chair of the IBI Group Green Team, and long-time proponent of saving the environment, during a ceremony celebrating the erection of a windmill at I-95 and Hillsboro Blvd in the City of Deerfield Beach of FDOT property.

Although it is non-generating electric windmill, it is the first in a campaign begun by Rogers to bring to reality his vision to line I-95 with power producing versions of the windmill in the near future.

Diane Guidry, Naturescape Broward Outreach Coordinator, designated the site as a future National Willdlife Habitat, complimenting Rogers on his efforts to bring his dream to fruition. She also thanked students from the Jim and Jan Moran Deerfield Boys & Girls Club who toiled in the hot sun to plant the flowers that will attract butterflies to the area in a section of land around the windmill base.

The windmill/butterfly garden dedication this month completed a  journey that started 4 years ago with a hand shake. Jim and Jan Moran committed to supporting Rogers’ vision with financial resources. Although challenging, Rogers had the continued support of both DOT and the City to build the first-time-ever windmill in the I-95 corridor.

Why a windmill and butterfly garden? Because the site of this icon stands for environmental best
management practices for water and energy. This refreshing wholesome image of the windmill will welcome the traveler, and remind us of its link to history.

The hosts for the event , JM Family Enterprise, supported the installation with $20,00. The City of Deerfield Beach is the maintenance partner, Butterfly World and Garden Gate provided live insects. Wooden Shoe Nursery and IBI Group provided plants. The contractor, Green Team Enterprise, discounted the cost of installation. The future looks bright for windmills throughout the Broward  I- 95 corridor.
